Role of Fertilizers in Sustainable Agriculture

Suceava (Romania), 21-22 August 2000
Proceedings edited by C. Hera, E. Schnug, M. Dumitru and A. Dorneanu

The 12th International Symposium of the International Scientific Center of Fertilizers (CIEC) was held in Suceava, Romania on 21-22 August 2000, under the topic of " Role of Fertilizers in Sustainable Agriculture ".
It was sponsored by many national organizations and international institutions including the World Phosphate Institute and the International Potash Institute.
Agriculture sustainability is incontestably very Important for the future of mankind, but performance of agriculture is of greatest relevance to satisfying food requirement for present and future generations. Fertilizers play and will continue to play a decisive role in maintaining or increasing soil fertility, crop productivity and meeting food demand for a continuously increasing world population. When they are used in a proper way, in accordance with soil fertility status, ecological conditions and nutrient crop demand, the negative effect of fertilizer on environment will be minimized or eliminated.

The Symposium provided a forum to exchange the latest detailed information and achievements in fertilizer research, development and applications and discuss future trends.

The proceedings include 23 oral papers in addition to 37 posters spread over four sessions:
1. Nutrient management for quantitative and qualitative sustainable crop production
2. Fertilizers use efficiency-methods and techniques of fertilizer application
3. Nutrient balance-the future fertilizers need for ecological sound and economic feasible sustainable crop production
4. Fertilizers strategies in sustainable agriculture

The symposium was attended by 116 participants from 20 countries
