In Western Europe, a series of surveys and agronomic research projects on phosphate fertilizer management in P-enriched soils were carried out in cooperation with several National Agricultural Research Centers. These undertakings provided a rationale for maintenance of optimal soil fertility and productivity using best management practices that preserve the environment. This was demonstrated through a network of field experiments and laboratory studies that assessed the effects of withholding P fertilizer on crop yields and plant-available P in various soils of Western Europe, and dealt with the different components as cited below:

The determination of soil phosphate reserves
P movement down the soil profile
Etude sur le statut du phosphore des sols de france
Conséquences de bilans culturaux contrastés sur l'offre en phosphore de la couche de et du sous-sol
Etude de la fertilité phosphorique des sols lorraine

In Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), IMPHOS organized jointly with IPI and the Research Centers from the region several workshops and symposiums with the objective to collect sound and relevant data and information on agriculture production and fertilizer uses. IMPHOS has identified partners to conduct several projects in some CEE countries to demonstrate to the farmers that the common practice of dropping drastically fertilizer use during the transition period has resulted in a soil mining strategy that will lead in the long-term to a non-sustainable agriculture.
